43 Surprising Ways to Use Video Cameras in the Classroom

Photo Story Student Projects
  1. Start with a photo story project using online images (or by taking pictures if you are ready for this element) using the Photo Story 3 program from Microsoft that is a free online download. For students to narrate their projects, microphones are needed, but you can just record the narration for each slide in the program. I suggest using a combination headset with microphone that plugs into the USB. (Note: Powerpoint is another viable option especially since it's a program that's widely used in the business world.)
  2. Next, if you would like to have students complete video projects, Microsoft also offers Movie Maker online free for educational purposes. (Scroll down and click "Get Started" to complete the download.)
  3. If you want to get the students taking pictures and video, buy a Flip MinoHD Camera or a Kodak zi8 Pocket Video Camera that also takes digital stills. Both have the USB arm for quickly and conveniently uploading your files to the computer and are extremely easy to use. The Mino has a fixed hard drive of 8 or 16 GB and creates MP4 files. The The zi8 is high definition, has a SD card slot, has several file format options from HD to VGA, and comes with a HDMI cable. These cameras are affordable and easy to use!
  4. Audio is an important element, so some sound tools will be needed. In some programs, the MP3 audio can be added and elementarily edited OR the audio can be recorded with a microphone. I would suggest investing in some USB headsets with a microphone and one earphone for playback. If you want to edit your audio first to mix your background music with your sound effects and voice recording, a sound editing program like Audacity or Garage Band (Mac) can be used. Audacity is a free shareware program available online. Sound can be mixed and spliced in this program and then rendered to an MP3.

Additional Resources
I have already listed these tools on my website, so I will direct you there to browse the potentially useful links:
Audio Tools - Students can create their own music or drumbeats in some free online programs. Online conversion tools can be useful if you find a sound you like but it's in the wrong sound format.
Image Tools - Students could create cartoon strips, graphs, charts, and other visuals that they create themselves using online tools. If there isn't an image download option, take a screen shot, edit it in paint, and save it as an image. There are free to use images and clip art sources listed here as well.
Video Tools - The conversion tools and the links to the program downloads are the most relevant on this page.
